Origins & History of the Rooney Clan
The historic Irish surname Rooney derives from the Gaelic Ó Maolruanaidh, traditionally translated as “Descendant of the Red-haired Hero”. Rooted deeply within the ancestral province of Ulster, particularly the territories of County Down, the clan maintained a revered status among the hereditary dynasties of ancient Ireland.
