Origins & History of the O'Scanlan Clan
The historic Irish surname O’Scanlan derives from the Gaelic Ó Scannláin, traditionally translated as “Little Trap or Snare”. Rooted deeply within the ancestral province of Connacht, particularly the territories of County Sligo, the clan maintained a revered status among the hereditary dynasties of ancient Ireland.
Throughout the medieval epoch, chieftains and families bearing the name O’Scanlan held extensive estates and defended their ancestral lands against encroaching Norman and Tudor forces.
