Origins & History of the O'Connor Clan
O’Connor is among the most illustrious royal lineages in Irish history. Derived from Ó Conchobhair, it originates from the ancient personal name Conchobhar, interpreted as “lover of hounds” or “champion”.
The O’Conors of County Roscommon provided the last High Kings of Ireland, including Turlough O’Conor and his son Rory O’Conor (Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair), who reigned before the Anglo-Norman invasion. Other distinct septs flourished in County Kerry (O’Connor Kerry) and County Offaly (O’Connor Faly).
In the United States, O’Connors were prominent in law, literature, and pioneer leadership across Texas, New York, and California.
