Origins & History of the Milligan Clan
The historic Irish surname Milligan derives from the Gaelic Ó Maolagáin, traditionally translated as “Little Devotee”. Rooted deeply within the ancestral province of Connacht, particularly the territories of County Sligo, the clan maintained a revered status among the hereditary dynasties of ancient Ireland.
Throughout the medieval epoch, chieftains and families bearing the name Milligan held extensive estates and defended their ancestral lands against encroaching Norman and Tudor forces.
