Origins & History of the MacMahon Clan
The historic Irish surname MacMahon derives from the Gaelic Mac Mathghamhna, traditionally translated as “Son of Bear”. Rooted deeply within the ancestral province of Ulster, particularly the territories of County Monaghan, the clan maintained a revered status among the hereditary dynasties of ancient Ireland.
Throughout the medieval epoch, chieftains and families bearing the name MacMahon held extensive estates and defended their ancestral lands against encroaching Norman and Tudor forces.
