Origins & History of the Griffin Clan
The historic Irish surname Griffin derives from the Gaelic Ó Gríobhtha, traditionally translated as “Griffin-like or Fierce”. Rooted deeply within the ancestral province of Munster, particularly the territories of County Clare, the clan maintained a revered status among the hereditary dynasties of ancient Ireland.
Throughout the medieval epoch, chieftains and families bearing the name Griffin held extensive estates and defended their ancestral lands against encroaching Norman and Tudor forces.
