Origins & History of the Egan Clan
The historic Irish surname Egan derives from the Gaelic Mac Aodhagáin, traditionally translated as “Son of the Fire-Born”. Rooted deeply within the ancestral province of Connacht, particularly the territories of County Galway, the clan maintained a revered status among the hereditary dynasties of ancient Ireland.
Throughout the medieval epoch, chieftains and families bearing the name Egan held extensive estates and defended their ancestral lands against encroaching Norman and Tudor forces.
