The Port of Limerick was situated sixty miles inland from the open ocean along the deep waters of the Shannon Estuary. This sheltered port allowed sailing vessels to load passengers and agricultural freight deep within Munster’s heartland.
During the Famine, timber barques arriving from Canada with Canadian pine returned with thousands of Irish emigrants in their steerage holds, disembarking in Quebec, Saint John, and New York.
