Beginning in the 1830s, thousands of Irishmen arrived along the Cuyahoga River to dig the Ohio & Erie Canal, establishing the settlement known as “Irishtown Bend” in the industrial Flats of Cleveland.

The connection between County Mayo and Cleveland became legendary. Over 70% of the Irish immigrants who settled in Cleveland hailed from Mayo, primarily parishes like Achill, Kilvine, and Castlebar. Today, West Park and Kamm’s Corners remain vibrant centers of Irish-American cultural life in the Midwest.
