County Offaly (formerly King’s County) is anchored by the sacred monastic city of Clonmacnoise, founded by St. Ciarán in 544 AD along the Shannon. In the nineteenth century, Birr Castle in Offaly housed the “Leviathan of Parsonstown,” the largest optical telescope in the world.
